Sick Children Policy
Illness, exclusion and administering medicine at ETT Sports camps.
Sick Children & Administering Medicine Policy — ETT Sports Limited
Parents are asked to keep their children at home if they have any infection, and to inform the group as to the nature of the infection. This will allow the group to alert other parents as necessary, and to make careful observations of any child who seems unwell.
Exclusion periods for illnesses are in line with Public Health Agency guidance on infection control in schools and other childcare settings.
Cuts or open sores, whether on adults or children, will be washed and if necessary, a dressing or bandage will be applied (not a plaster in case of allergic reaction).
We are unable to administer non-prescribed medication unless we feel your child is at risk if we do not do so (for example high temperatures in children under 1 year or children with a medical history of temperature related convulsions). In these circumstances we will contact you before administering the medication and you will be asked to text or email the setting to give written consent and sign the medication record when you collect your child.
Prescribed medication
If a child is on prescribed medication the following procedures will be followed:
- If possible, the child’s parents will administer medicine. If not, then medication must be stored in the original container clearly labelled with child’s name, dosage and any instructions.
- Written information will be obtained from the parent, giving clear instructions about the dosage; last time the medicine was administered by the parent/carer; and permission for a member of staff to administer the medication.
- All medications will be kept inaccessible to children.
- A medication book will be available to log the name of child receiving medication; time last administered by the parent; times that the medication should be administered; date and time when medication is administered and by whom.
- With regard to the administration of life saving medication such as insulin/adrenaline injections or the use of nebulisers, if specialist knowledge is required we seek training from a qualified professional.
We will ensure that the first aid equipment is kept clean, replenished, and replaced as necessary. Sterile items will be kept sealed in their packages until needed.
We will ensure first aid qualifications remain in date; there will always be on the premises sufficient qualified first aiders trained to administer first aid to children.
Parents will have the opportunity to discuss health issues with us and support to access information as appropriate.
